Dragon Buffet, Richland Center, Wisconsin
We live in Richland Center in the summers. It is seriously lacking in vegetarian choices when eating out. There is a Taco Bell, Pizza Hut (without cheese on anything and too much grease), Papa Murphy's (where a veg pizza without cheese is the best one can get), and the Dragon Buffet. We have also tried a place called Los Amigos 2, although they have lard in the beans and chicken stock in their rice.
The only sit-down restaurant we like to eat at is the Dragon Buffet. It is not a vegetarian restaurant but it does have a few choices on the menu. The buffet has absolutely nothing vegan and the vegetarian ones are questionable (like, is there no beef sauce in that?). One of the few items that we can eat here is Kung Bo Tofu. It has cashews and vegetables that are cooked just right. Just recently we've been coming back to the DB because for years they did an awful job cooking the tofu. Actually, we're not sure if they cooked it at all! It looked like they just threw it in the Kung Bo plate right before serving it to us. Eww. It had no taste and they used medium firm tofu, which just did not do the dish any favors. So, we stopped going. Eventually ownership switched and we tried it again...with anticipation. The cashews and vegetables were still cooked correctly but what did they do to the tofu?...Dun, dun, dunnn.
Luckily, it turned out much better than last time! I thought the tofu had a nice crunch on the outside and had the soft middle which makes it juicy and chewy. The sauce was more sweet than savory, although the sauce adds to the dish in a good way. DB added rice to go with it, and that complements the sauce a lot. The sauce didn't knock off any of our socks though. The menu said the Kung Bo plate was supposed to be spicy--there was no spice to be found in the dish, which really disappointed some of us. We're not sure if they forgot it or they thought we couldn't handle it being Northern Americans. The tofu in this dish was fried but not so much that it was dried out, because of this it kept a very nice texture. Overall we were impressed that the dish changed so much--we will actually return each summer now. Every time I go to the Dragon Buffet and I order the Kung Bo Tofu. I enjoy it. It has not gotten old yet.
