Bangkok 54, Durham, North Carolina
This is a small restaurant we found in a strip mall in town. We decided to order the usual: Massaman Curry and Pad See Ew. We haven’t really been satisfied with what we’ve found in Durham so far, we’ve tried several places to no avail.
Pad See Ew
The Pad See Ew was sweeter than it needs to be and not as salty as we like, the tofu is decently flavored though. The tofu was lightly browned on the outside and that gave it good texture. Bangkok 54 seems to have sautéed the tofu with the dish, because it was sautéed (for what we know) the flavor of the sauce doesn’t get all the way to the inside of the tofu like it did with the curry dish below. I would give it full stars, but I really don’t like whatever sauce they’re using for the dish, and the noodles were not fully cooked or wide as we like, and were super chewy. The crunch of the broccoli was perfect though (keep the perfect broccoli, Bangkok 54!) and a highlight of the dish.
3.5 whole dish
3 Tofu from the snob (but someone else in the party rated it as a 4)
In the Massaman Curry the tofu is sweet, there’s a soft crust to it and the curry contributes to most of the flavor. It looks like the tofu was cooked differently in both of these dishes, which one does not always get in a restaurant. Inside the tofu is very soft, with the added outside crunchiness, the texture of it contributes perfectly to the meal. Soft inside, firm on the outside, not overly cooked or too dry. The crunch of the tofu wasn’t what I would prefer, I would have liked a bit more to add to the texture. An added touch of cashews in this dish makes it a lot of fun though. The cashews added more crunch to the creamy curry, with a balanced texture to the dish. The whole dish was healthy and tasty, and the rice also makes it hearty and filling.
Whole: 4
Tofu: 4 (would have liked more crunch)
